Republican Senator’s Arrest Highlights GOP Double Standard on Morality and LGBTQ+ Rights

The Republican Party has long positioned itself as the defender of family values, waging war on LGBTQ+ rights under the pretense of protecting children. Yet, the latest scandal involving Minnesota State Sen. Justin Eichorn—a lawmaker caught in an underage sex sting—once again exposes the blatant hypocrisy within the party.

Arrest and Charges

On March 17, 2025, Sen. Justin Eichorn, R-Grand Rapids, was arrested in Bloomington, Minnesota, after allegedly attempting to meet a 17-year-old girl for sex. Unbeknownst to him, the “girl” was actually an undercover officer participating in a sting operation targeting child exploitation.

Police say Eichorn was arrested without incident after arriving at the designated location in his pickup truck. When officers searched his vehicle, they found two cell phones, $129 in cash, and a condom.

Eichorn now faces a felony charge in Hennepin County for prostitution with someone “reasonably believed under 18 but at least 16.” In addition, he has been federally charged with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor. He remains in custody at the Hennepin County Jail.

GOP Leaders Call for Resignation

Republican leaders in Minnesota quickly distanced themselves from Eichorn, calling for his immediate resignation.

“We are shocked by these reports, and this alleged conduct demands an immediate resignation,” Minnesota Senate GOP leadership stated. “Justin has a difficult road ahead, and he needs to focus on his family.”

Minnesota GOP Chair Alex Plechasha echoed the sentiment:

“As Republicans, we hold elected officials to a higher standard. While Senator Eichorn is entitled to due process, the seriousness of these charges warrants his resignation. Public trust and accountability must come first.”

Democrats also condemned Eichorn, with DFL Executive Director Heidi Kraus Kaplan stating, “No one who solicits children belongs anywhere near public office or the State Capitol.”

The Timing: “Trump Derangement Syndrome” Bill

Adding another layer of irony, records show that Eichorn introduced a bill the same day as his arrest attempting to classify “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a mental illness. The bill, co-sponsored by four other Republicans, aimed to amend Minnesota’s definition of mental illness to include the term, in what many saw as a performative attack on political opponents.

This legislative stunt, coupled with his arrest, underscores how Republican lawmakers often engage in culture war distractions while failing to uphold the moral standards they claim to champion.

The GOP’s Anti-LGBTQ Agenda

Eichorn’s arrest is just the latest in a series of Republican scandals that expose the party’s hypocrisy. While he and his colleagues push laws restricting LGBTQ+ rights under the guise of protecting children, their own ranks are riddled with sex offenders and predators.

In recent years, the GOP has aggressively pursued anti-LGBTQ+ policies:

  • House Republicans inserted at least 45 anti-LGBTQ+ provisions into federal spending bills, attempting to weaken discrimination protections for same-sex couples and limit transgender rights.
  • GOP-led states have pushed laws banning drag performances and restricting LGBTQ+ education in schools.
  • Several Republican lawmakers have falsely claimed LGBTQ+ people are a threat to children, despite mounting evidence that many abusers come from within their own ranks.

The Republican Party’s Pattern of Predators

Eichorn’s arrest is not an isolated incident. The GOP has a disturbing history of sex scandals, many involving minors:

  • Aaron von Ehlinger: The former Idaho state representative was convicted of raping a legislative intern and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • John Jessup: The Indiana politician pleaded guilty to attempting to sexually assault his daughter and resigned in disgrace.
  • Matt Gaetz: The Florida congressman was investigated for alleged sex trafficking involving an underage girl. While he wasn’t charged, a House Ethics Committee report detailed evidence of his misconduct.

Despite this pattern, Republican lawmakers continue to frame LGBTQ+ people as threats to children while shielding actual predators within their own party.

Political Fallout and Hypocrisy

Republicans have been relentless in their efforts to expel Democratic Sen. Nicole Mitchell, who faces unrelated felony burglary charges. Yet, their stance on Eichorn presents a clear double standard.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, acknowledged the gravity of Eichorn’s arrest, stating that it “raises serious questions that will need to be answered by the court, as well as his caucus and constituents.”

With Democrats holding only a one-seat majority in the Minnesota Senate, any expulsion could trigger a special election and shift the balance of power.

Conclusion

Once again, the Republican Party’s crusade against LGBTQ+ rights is exposed for what it is: a hollow moral panic designed to distract from its own internal corruption. While GOP lawmakers claim to be protecting children from LGBTQ+ influence, their own members continue to be caught exploiting and abusing minors.

As Sen. Justin Eichorn’s legal battle unfolds, Republicans face a critical question: Will they continue to demonize marginalized communities while harboring actual predators within their ranks, or will they finally address the rot within?
